Music to Work By: 15 Albums Necessary for Any Designer’s Playlist

I’m the kind of guy that generally likes to have some sort of sound going at all times (even at night…via a humidifier).

When I’m doing work it’s certainly no different, in that regard. But what is different about sound while I’m working is that it has an effect on my mood. Certain music at certain times help me stay more focused or feel more creative. It’s definitely a major part of my workflow, so I figured I’d list a few albums that are on constant rotation during my work day. Enjoy.

Be sure to let me know in the comments about some albums that you love listening to while you work.

Idiot PilotIdiot Pilot - Wolves
One of my favorite albums in the past year. No song is the same so it keeps things fresh and flowing.

Sigur RosSigur Ros - Takk…
In addition to the fact that Sigur Ros makes some of the most original music on the planet, the fact that these guys rarely have words in their songs makes it the perfect album to listen to while you’re designing (no getting distracted by some catchy line in a song).

Telefon Tel AvivTelefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough (iTunes link)
This isn’t the latest album by Telefon Tel Aviv, but in my mind it’s by far the best. I can put this on and play it from start to finish without skipping a song. A must have for any “work” (or personal) playlist.

TychoTycho - Past is Prologue
Tycho is made up of Scott Hansen, a phenomenal designer, who you really should know about whether you like his music or not. I think his music is just as phenomenal as his design work.

M83M83 - Saturdays = Youth
Whenever I feel like taking a mental trip back to the 80’s this is the album I throw on. So. Good.

Imogen HeapImogen Heap - Speak For Yourself
This isn’t a particularly new album (it was release in 2005), but I consistently come back to it. This Electronic/Pop album can only put you in a good mood.

Secret & WhisperSecret & Whisper - Great White Whale
Rock. And. Roll.

CartelCartel - Cartel
I find sometimes I just need a good ‘ole pop/rock album to get things moving. This one will do the trick.

AthleteAthlete - Tourist
Catchy tunes that you’ll find yourself humming along with and will put a smile on your face.

As Tall As LionsAs Tall As Lions - As Tall As Lions
A foot-tappin’ album that will have you wondering why you hadn’t been listening to these guys longer.

Colour RevoltColour Revolt - Plunder, Beg, and Curse
A couple of guys I grew up with (and played a few shows with back in my rock ‘n roll days) have come a long way with their music and this album is just a great listen, though you’ll find yourself pondering what all the lyrics really mean.

IvorylineIvoryline - There Came A Lion
See the description for Secret & Whisper above.

Jimmy Eat WorldJimmy Eat World - Bleed American
Best Jimmy Eat World album, hands down. Every single song on this album is fantastic. Best listened to with the volume turned up to 12.

Panic at the DiscoPanic at the Disco - Pretty. Odd.
This second release from Panic at the Disco is a fairly solid departure from their debut album. It’s got a certain classic quality to it that makes it an album you’d want to keep in rotation instead of something you’d just listen to a few times and then get tired of it.

This Day & AgeThis Day & Age - The Bell & the Hammer
These guys just make straight up good music…which is hard to find these days. Unfortunately they disbanded.

Nice to see other designers happen to find the same albums very inspirational for designing.
When I design I listen to a few of the above albums already:

Sigur Ros - Takk
Tycho - Past Is Prologue
Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself
As Tall As Lions
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American

:D

Tycho & Sigur Ros are absolutely perfect choices.
